The power of friendship

Yesterday I was on my way to spend some much  needed one-on-one girl time with one of my very best friends and I had some alone time in the car to reflect. You see, I normally fill my time in the car with phone calls, but yesterday I left my phone at home.  As I was thinking about how thankful I was to spend time with Kirsten, it hit me how God has placed the exact right person in my life for whatever need I have.

It all started on my very first day of dorm life in college.  My parents had just pulled out of the parking lot and I was feeling a major sense of shock and sadness.  What in the world was I going to do all by myself in a new town?!?  To put it mildly; I was terrified.  I don't even remember now which one of us made the phonecall, but before I knew it I was on the phone with Bonney, and she was expressing the same feelings I was.  From that moment on, I had a best friend and confidant in Bonney.  She had the same close bond to her parents as I did, and we were going to make it through this college thing together.  We ate meals together, bought books together, and made new friends together.  After we suffered through dorm life, we lived together the remaining three years of undergrad.  I never felt alone again.

While still in college, I somehow got involved in founding a sorority at UGA.  I ventured into that endeavor with someone who was a good friend at the time, but I was quickly realizing that she and I were very different people.  Around that time, we welcomed our very first class of initiates.  This may sound very strange, but the very first time I saw Kirsten I instantly knew we were going to be the best of friends!  She and I had a lot of the same qualities, and it turns out she lived in the same apartment complex as me (it's funny how so many of my closest college friends, and future husband, all lived right there at the luxurious River Club).  Anyway, the rest was history.  Some of my favorite memories were around that pool.  That's where she and I discussed my future relationship with Bryan, and where I skipped class for the very first time.  She's still someone who I can talk to about life's biggest problems.

Fast forward to the "real world".  It was my very first busy season when my mom was diagnosed with cancer.  I was overwhelmed in every sense of the word.  She had been sick for a few months at this point, and Bryan and I had made the decision to move to Atlanta, which meant my mom moved with us.  Shortly after the move, my mom took a turn for the worse, and I was at my wits end.  I'll never forget the moment that Susan reached out to me.  I was standing out on the back porch getting some fresh air, and my cell phone rang.  I didn't know the number, but as exhausted as I was, I answered it anyway.  It was Susan.  We had talked on multiple occasions, and were beginning to develop a friendship, but she took a leap of faith and reached out to me.  She thought I might need someone to talk to about my mom.  Boy was she right.  I needed her like nothing else.  Susan literally held me up at times during my mom's illness and after she passed. She was able to give me a perspective that most people couldn't.  She had experienced family illness in her life, and she was a mom herself.  Since my mom's personality was so altered from the brain cancer, it was rare that she and I could have real conversations.  There were many times that I felt Susan completely stepped in and said what my mom couldn't.  She loved me and cared for me in a very unconditional way.  We still do dinner about once a month, and they are always 3+ hour conversations.  It's good for my soul to talk to her.

After my mom passed, I quickly realized that one of the times I felt most sad and missed my mom the most was in the car.  I know that sounds strange, but I always called my mom while I was in the car - and she was always there to talk to me.  I didn't have that anymore.  Sure I could call lots of people, but there was no one who I could just talk to about everything for a really long time.  Enter Kristina.  She started work, and we became fast friends (notice a theme here?).  We began talking to each other before and after work (and obviously often during work when we were at a client together) on our long car rides.  Sometimes we would talk for two hours a day, and we'd cover just about every topic under the sun.  We could banter back and forth about nothing, or cover really serious topics.  It drove our husbands crazy sometimes because one of us would get home before the other, but we'd just keep on talking.  Honestly, it would probably be embarassing to add up how much time we've spent on the phone total.  When I got home from Paris, we broke a record on the phone.  That's just how our bond works - some people hug it out, we talk it out.

Most recently when I started work at Coke, God put two more people in my life.  I was terrified to start work and start over on friendships.  I was so close to my friends at PKM.  What if I didn't find anything like that at Coke?  I can't say that I'll ever find anyone like Susan or Kristina, but I have found some people who make coming to work really great.  On my very first day of work I met Valerie.  She sat down at that big conference table across from me, and I felt a little more at ease.  She and Bryan wen to law school together, and though that certainly didn't mean that she and I knew each other well - she was a familiar face!  Since then, she's become my gym partner, my lunch date, and we're even starting a Young Professionals group at Coke (that's big stuff people).  I have also made fast friends with Nipa.  I met her on my second audit at Coke, and she's the closest thing I'm going to find to a "Kristina" (Kris - please note the appropriate use of quotation marks).  She's that person who will wait for you and walk into a group meeting together, she'll save me a seat at a table, and always remember to ask me what my lunch plans are.  We talk about a lot more than just work, and I always look forward to the days when she's working downtown.

I don't say all of this to brag about my awesome friends (but really, they are amazing), but I say it because I believe God always places the exact right person in your life at the exact right moment.  Some of these friendships were always there, but were just taken to a different level due to a life event.  All of these people are still my very closest friends.  It's hard for me to say I have a best friend because really I have multiple best friends.  In fact, I haven't even mentioned all of them here - only the ones that were made my best friend through life changing events.  I would actually be remiss to not mention Amy (who is only the best sister-in-law in the world), and Elizabeth, who functions as my constant reminder of what it means to be a strong woman.  I am also certain there are relationships that will change and become more powerful in my future.  I feel beyond blessed to be surrounded by a group of women that are so powerful and influental.  I am certain I would not be the person I am today without their constant love and support.  I always strive to be the kind of friend to them that they are to me.  That kind of love changes lives.

We're Baaackk!!

Technically we've been back for a week, but who's counting?  I'd like to say it was jet lag that kept me from posting for a week, but honestly I was just being lazy.  Oops.  So, let's get started with catching up, shall we?

First thing's first - we had an AMAZING Christmas!  Bryan and I were both very excited about hosting Christmas at our house for the first time.  Don't get me wrong, we love going down to Brunswick for Christmas, but there was just something really exciting about starting some of our own traditions here in Atlanta.  The family arrived on Friday, and we had a nice spaghetti dinner once everyone was in town.  That Friday was also a special day for me and Bryan as it was the 5 year anniversary of the day he proposed.  The two of us had lunch at a new restaurant in Decatur to celebrate.  Christmas Eve was full of lots of fun.  We started the day off with some delicious breakfast at Sugar Coated Radical (if you live in Atlanta, you MUST check this place out.  Amazing.).  Then we went over to the World of Coke.  I hadn't been since I started work with Coke, and so it was just a fun thing to do with everyone.  After that it was mani/pedis for the ladies while the men hit up Atlantic Station.  That night we went over to the Klisch's for Christmas Eve dinner, and some Stillwagon Scattegories.  It was a blast!  Christmas Day was pretty much perfect! We all got up, and spent the morning (and some of the afternoon) opening presents.  You see, we don't have the philosophy of just ripping open all the presents at once.  Present opening is a very thoughtful process, and everyone goes one at a time.  You spend so much time picking out presents, so why rush through the opening part?  We even had "half-time" to get some snacks and take a break before we finished.  The rest of the day was spent playing, and hanging out in our PJs.  It was pretty awesome.

A family pic before the Klisch's move to Chicago.

And then for the REAL family pic

Christmas morning - we opened stockings first.

Christmas dinner - yes we're still in PJ's.  :)

That brings us to Paris!!!  Bryan and I flew out the day after Christmas, and spent 5 amazing days in Paris.  I don't even know where to begin with how much I enjoyed the city.  The architecture was stunning, the streets were beautiful, the people were nice, the food was unbelievable, and the city was especially romantic at night.  Instead of telling you all about, it's easier to show you in pictures.

THE best bread in Paris.  OMG.

The first night we got there it was so foggy you couldn't see the top of the Eiffel Tower.  We still wanted to go see it though.  Pretty good picture considering the lack of sleep at this point. :)

The first restaurant we went to had a sampler as a dessert option.  I'm sorry - have you met my husband?

Believe it or not, this is a picture from the top of a department store.  Quite the view!

We had one really sunny day while we were there.  So we woke up really early to get in line for the Eiffel tower.  It was totally worth it - amazing!

From the very top.  Not gonna lie - it was pretty scary up there.

Like I said....it was a good thing we got in line earlier.  This was the line only an hour after it opened.

Notre Dame.

A street performer.  I just thought this was a great picture.

Arc de Triomphe - the traffic here totally blew my mind.  I stood there for a few minutes in awe of how in the world they made it around that circle.  I saw so many near accidents!

It was quite impressive.

Me with the Eiffel Tower.

Bryan's turn.  This is what happens when you travel as a couple.

The Moulin Rouge.

We went on a food tour (that Bryan created) and went to this amazing chocolate store.  This is the owner. She was completely quirky and oh so cute!!  Loved it!

Okay, I have to admit.  I don't like soft french cheese.  This was brie....I called it stinky cheese.  Yes I've had brie in the U.S., and yes I like it.  No, I couldn't even eat one bite over there.  Ugh.

Angelina's hot chocolate.  OMG - it was like a melted chocolate bar.  Yes please.  I would also like to add that on this particular day Bryan and I wore our rain jackets.  Are you aware that everyone in Paris wears black?  I'm not talking about just a few people wearing a little bit of black. I'm talking about the entire city dresses in all black.  We kind of stood out.

Embarrassing myself.

At least I'm not alone.

A cool shot Bryan got with the panoramic feature on his iPhone. We had a few people looking at us.

NYE at the Eiffel tour.  Quite memorable, and a great way to start 2012!

A New Year's Day breakfast of champions.  Everywhere was closed, and we were too cheap to pay for the breakfast at the hotel, so we ate what we had.  Macaroons (b/c we totally ate our weight in macaroons while we were there), leftover champagne from the night before, and a banana from the flight to Paris.  Better than nothing.

Needless to say, we had a ball on our trip.  I fell in love with the city of lights, and can't wait to go back!  There was so much that we still want to do there.  And to think we were worried that we wouldn't be able to fill our time for 5 days.  What a joke!

P.S. - be sure to check out Bryan's Photography page.  He added a few of his best shots from Paris.  (He's so talented!)

Merry Christmas!

November and December are probably two of my favorite months of the whole year b/c I love the time from Thanksgiving to Christmas so much! I love spending tons of time with family and friends, the way the house looks even more homey all decorated for Christmas, and the good mood everyone is in!  This year we once again hosted our Christmas party for all our friends.  We love nothing more than to have everyone here and fill the house with laughter and great memories.  Bryan had the amazing idea of putting a photo booth in our office for everyone to take pictures in.   Here are a few pics of the party decor and the photo booth!

Many thanks to the Swartwoods, Whitworths, and Lischkes for arriving early to help with the set-up!! ;)

There was a hot chocolate bar, and it was amazing!  I took a total gamble on trying out a brand new recipe the night of the party, and thank goodness it was a big hit.

Easily one of my favorite pics of the night!

Exhuasted.

Bryan's family is headed into town tomorrow, and we are beyond thrilled to be hosting Christmas at our house for the very first time this year!  We have a fun day planned for Christmas Eve, and then we're headed over to the Klisch's to wish them well before the big move to Chicago.  I know I speak for everyone when I say we'll miss them dearly, but I know I will especially miss them b/c I never grew up with family close by.  Though we don't see them all the time, it has always been so nice to know that they're close by.  I have really enjoyed seeing David and Jessica grow up as well!! But we do know that we'll be making trips up to visit them in Chicago, and they'll be heading down this way as well.  So to the Klisch's - Atlanta will miss you, but Chicago is lucky to have you! ;)

We're going to keep Christmas Day full of what's important - family time and good food!  Then it's off to Paris! Needless to say, I'm going to take a bit of a break from blogging until the New Year in order to really enjoy my time off!  We hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

Midweek confessions

Week 2 of midweek confessions:

- I'm sitting at a conference right now. Don't worry, my manager isn't even paying attention.

- Said conference is in Las Vegas. Being at a conference in Vegas this close to Christmas makes me feel like I'm in a time warp. Work is on hold, Christmas shopping is on hold, and I don't feel stressed about any of it. I'm just having fun and trying to learn a lot.

- When I fly by myself I freak out that I'm going to get lost in the airport. This is completely ridiculous bc I've flown a lot and know my way around. I guess it just being by myself. Thankfully my husband very patiently listens to my concerns without laughing at my ridiculousness.

I'll blog more about my Vegas trip when I get home. For now I'm going to learn more about improving the tax provision process. Bunch of nerds.

Weekend update

This evening, I'm writing to you from a much higher elevation than normal as I'm on my way to Vegas for training.  Apparently the only way they can get people to commit to the tax audit is to send us to Vegas.  I'm in! :)

This weekend was crazy busy, but really fun.  Friday I had the day off, so Bonney and I met up for a girl's lunch, then I ran some errands before a wonderful date night with the hubs.  Nowadays our datenights are comprised of speed decorating (we wanted to get the outside decorations up before we headed out for dinner) followed by a very relaxing dinner at West Egg and then Bridesmaids (hilarious).  I wouldn't have it any other way.  Saturday morning I felt like I was on some type of hidden camera episode.  The goal was for me to head to volunteer at the Season of Giving gift intake while Bryan went to start tailgating.  I would then ride MARTA to meet him there for the SEC Championship.  Well, the morning was completely chaotic.  I managed to set off our alarm when I opened the door to let Keith in first thing in the morning.  Great, but we can recover.  Then we were running late and didn't have any breakfast - time for a Chick-fil-A run obviously.  So we were running around the house trying to get out the door in enough time for me to get to my volunteering destination, and then managed to set off Keith and Mike's alarm when we dropped Bailey off.  Awesome.  So after a very rushed breakfast at Chick-fil-A I dropped Bryan off at the Decatur MARTA station and headed on to the gift intake.  When I arrived everything was already going 90 miles an hour so I just jumped right in.  This was my second year helping with the Season of Giving, and I always enjoy the gift intake. It's completely overwhelming to see such generosity by the community.  The whole gym was filled with yard bags full of generous donations to children in need.

At noon, Keith relieved me of my duties, and I was off to the SEC Championship with Bryan and the Whitworths.  We had the most amazing 3 hour lunch "tailgate" at the Peasant Bistro!! Our waiter even bought us dessert to appologize for how long our lunch took. Please - we were enjoying ourselves!!  The SEC championship game first half of the SEC championship game was amazing! We stomped all over those little Tigers.  We won't talk abou the second half.  I'm still very proud of our Dawgs though, and I have to say - we're going to look pretty good next year if that first half was any indication of our capabilities!

Today was a very productive day at home.  We enjoyed a great service at Decatur First United Methodist, and tried a new place in Emory Village for lunch (Bad Dog Taquiera).  Bryan did lots of yardwork while I packed for Vegas, we ordered our Christmas cards, and now here I am on a plane.  I hope you all have a great week!  I'm going to be living it up in Vegas learning lots about taxes.

Midweek Confessions

One of the blogs I read does a Midweek Confessions posting series and I always love it. It may not be original, but it's always honest so here goes nothing....

I haven't been to the gym since before Thanksgiving. Yep - I ate pretty much everything in sight last week and went on and on about how I was going to work it off this week. Nope - haven't even been once. The worst part is that two nights this week I couldn't go bc I had dinner plans after work. Oh well.

I haven't finished decorating for Christmas. We started on Sunday night and there are still boxes all over the house. We actually just had to deal with the mess so that the cleaning lady can do her thing tomorrow.

My gym buddy emails me to tell me when there's good food at work. Today she emailed me to tell me there was peach cobbler, and I blame her for telling me where the froyo and the slushie machines are. I am proud to say I have avoided the later. I eat the former almost daily. With M&Ms.

I have been reading the same book for three months. I just can't find the time to sit down and commit to reading. So it's two pages a night for the next few months.

That's all for now. I feel better. :) Do you have any confessions?

Thanksgiving!!!

I'm back from a little writing hiatus to enjoy the holidays!  We spent Thanksgiving with the whole (well almost whole) Stillwagon crew up in Habersham.  Originally, I thought it would be really hard to spend Thanksgiving at the mountain house (aka the house I grew up in).  And it was, but it was also just overwhelmingly fun and special.  It was always just me and my parents sitting around the table growing up.  There were a few Thanksgivings where a grandparent or friend would come over, but for the most part it was just the three of us.  My mom would cook everything, and my dad and I would eat everything.  I would always insist on using the china and crystal (which meant I had to wash it all b/c my mom refused to use anything that wouldn't go in the dishwasher), and this year we used that same china.  You could argue there were only a few similarities between my Thanksgivings growing up and this past one.  Those similiarities would be the china we dined on, a plethora of good food, and an overwhelming sense of love.  I'm pretty sure those three things (okay, the two things - the china isn't really important) are the only things that matter on Thanksgiving.  From the outside looking in, there's a huge difference between a little wooden table with three people around it, and two full tables with 12 people talking and laughing, but to me there was no real difference.  I was surrounded by people I loved.

This year we had all sorts of things going on.  We cooked, we ate, we crafted, we participated in the Thanksgiving Olympics, ate some more, the men built railings while we chatted, we ate again, zip lined, watched football, and played lots of Scattegories while we ate some more.  It was a really fun time.  Bryan took lots of great pictures as well.  Here are a few:

Family time before the eating began.

We had two turkeys....and they were both delicious!!

Grandma Stillwagon looking beautiful as always.

Mia and Bailey were literally drooling over the smell of turkey.  Can't say I blamed them.

This was the redneck portion of the day - which I dubbed the Thanksgiving Olympics.  Jessica's science project was to test the effects of caffeine on the heart rate. She measured off 40 yards (on the road no less) and we ran it, took our heart rate, chugged a caffeinated beverage and ran again.  The results were that your heart rate does in fact go up (and you laugh non-stop at a bunch of rednecks running up and down the road).

Friday morning Bryan and his dad went on an early morning photography expedition.  They got some great pictures, but be warned: that waterfall is very slippery.  Bryan can tell you all about it.  He slid most of the way down.  Thankfully he only has a few scrapes and bruises to show for it (and some really cool pictures).

We also went zip lining!  Let me correct that - the zip lining place could only take 9 people, so me, Bryan, and his grandma stayed behind to take pictures.  Bryan and I had done it before so we wanted everyone else to have the experience.  They had a blast, and we had fun watching them at the places where we could meet up.

Gentlemen - she's single and ready to mingle.  That would be Amy, not Jessica. :) Sorry Amy for trying to set you up with the zip lining tour guides.  Actually, I'm not sorry - it was fun!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families!!  We're decorating for Christmas now.  It is the most wonderful time of the year after all. :)
